Peace Be Still

The apostles didn’t set out in a storm and they didn’t expect one either, but the Sea of Galilee was raging, and water was filling their boat.

When they roused Jesus from sleep, He began to work.

Mark 4:39.  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Mark 4:41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

We may be facing some storms in our lives and it will help us to know all we can about the One who rides in our vessel.

Jesus still calms our troubled seas. Jesus still gives peace. Call on Him.

Mary A. Baker, an active worker in the temperance cause, was the author of various hymns and temperance songs.

Her most popular hymn, “Master, The Tempest Is Raging — Peace”, was written in 1874 at the request of Dr. H. R. Palmer, who asked her to write several songs on the subjects of a series of Sunday School Lessons for that year.

Peace be still

“Master, the tempest is raging!   —   The billows are tossing high!   —   The sky is o'er-shadowed with blackness,   —   No shelter or help is nigh:   —   “Carest Thou not that we perish?   —   How canst Thou lie asleep,   —   When each moment so madly is threatning,   —   A grave in the angry deep?

Chorus

The winds and the waves shall obey My will,   —   “Peace, be still.”   —   Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea,   —   Or demons, or men, or whatever it be.   —   No water can swallow the ship where lies   —   The Master of ocean and earth and skies;   —   They all shall sweetly obey My will,   —   Peace be still, peace be still.   —   They all shall sweetly obey My will;   —   Peace, peace be still.

“Master, with anguish of spirit I bow in my grief today;   —   The depths of my sad heart are troubled;   —   Oh, waken and save, I pray!   —   Torrents of sin and of anguish   —   Sweep o'er my sinking soul!   —   And I perish! I perish! Dear Master;   —   Oh, hasten and take control!

“”Master, the terror is over, the elements sweetly rest.   —   Earth's sun in the calm lake is mirrored,   —   And heaven's within my breast.   —   Linger, O blessed Redeemer,   —   Leave me alone no more;   —   And with joy I shall make the blest harbor,   —   And rest on the blissful shore.

Mary A Baker 1874
