How Great Thou Art

 Psalm 8:3-4,9 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

[4] What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

[9] O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

"How Great Thou Art" is a hymn based on a Swedish poem written by Carl Gustav Boberg in 1885, the melody a Swedish folk song.

Stuart K. Hine, a British Missionary, translated it from Russian to English and added two original verses of his own composition.

Though only a paraphrase, it captures the original awe and wonder of Carl Boberg's poem.

Hine added the third verse about his amazement that Jesus would die for our sins.

Sing this song and worship.

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,    —   Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;    —   I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,    —   Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

CHORUS:

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,    —   How great Thou art, How great Thou art.    —   Then sings my soul, My Savior  God, to Thee,    —   How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, — And hear the  birds sing sweetly in the trees.    —   When I look down, from lofty mountains grandeur    —   And see the brook, and feel the gentile breeze.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;  —  Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;    —   That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,    —   He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, — And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.    —   Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,    —   And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"
