Joshua 6:20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
Walled cities like Jericho (built on hills) are only conquered after sieges lasting several months, causing the people inside to starve to death. God’s victory plan is different and strange, and all Joshua has to do is follow the plan and the walls will fall down.
Seven priests blowing seven trumpets (ram’s horns) are to walk behind the armed men of Israel and before the ark. The people follow. They parade around the city once a day for six days---seven on the seventh day. After the priests blow their trumpets with a long blast, the people shout and “the walls come tumbling down”.
The ancient city of Jericho that stood between Israel and victory is a picture of things that prevent us from going deeper with God. If we are to enjoy victories we must follow God’s plan for our lives and yield to His power, not ours.
